Bat Houses
Bat houses are fundamental to providing habitat for bats where natural roosts are no longer available, or where bats have been excluded from structures. There are many options available through online and retail outlets, but not all of them are good. Many are poorly designed or constructed using unsuitable materials. Bats are smart and finicky and a poorly designed bat house can actually be harmful. It may take bats a very long time to adopt an artificial roost, so it’s important that it is made to last many years. Similarly, if a bat house is occupied, the last thing you want to do is disturb it in any way for maintenance like painting, caulking or other repair, as that activity may drive the bats away.
For these reasons, Buffalo Bat Habitat has partnered with Bat Conservation and Management (BCM) to be our bat house supplier. BCM bat houses are designed by bat biologists and constructed to last many decades in the harshest elements. They are also “bat-approved,” seeing a high rate of adoption in the field.

Important note: just because you have the best bat house is no guarantee that bats will use it. There are many factors to consider, especially related to placement. Please check out BCM’s Learning Center for more information about proper bat house placement and a host of other bat-related topics. You can also contact us for assistance.
If you are thinking about building your own bat house, this book is a great resource. It provides detailed instructions on bat house construction as well as considerations for placement.
